Must-Know Winter Sailing Safety Tips

winter sailing safety tips

Sailing in winter can be incredible. The water is much less crowded and peaceful, and the views can take your breath away on a crisp, clear day. Some must-know winter sailing safety tips can make your time out on the water as fun and successful as possible.

It seems we’re not the only ones who agree about the joys of winter sailing, as a recent survey found that a third of people use their boat most weeks, even in winter months.

If you’re heading out sailing this winter, there are some safety tips you need to know…

1. Plan your route ahead

Plan, plan and plan some more. Organise shorter sails, as days out on the water in winter are more tasking on the body than in finer weather at other times throughout the year.

Always plan a route that will be comfortable for your least hardy sailor, and always check weather forecasts thoroughly before setting off. Even if it looks like it’s going to remain calm and clear, check to see if there are any changes coming.

It’s also always a good idea to take physical charts when out sailing, as we can’t always rely on technology. View our range of charts here.

2. Always wear your lifejacket, personal floatation device or buoyancy aid

Wearing a lifejacket, personal floatation device, or buoyancy aid is a must when sailing at any time of year, however, it’s more important than ever in winter. Always ensure everyone you’re with does the same too.

No matter how experienced a sailor or strong a swimmer you are, accidents can happen, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

3. Stay warm with the right gear

Go for lots of thin layers rather than thick ones, as these will keep you warmer for longer. Must-have items for us in winter are drysuits, race boots, fleeces, gloves, and thick, cosy socks. We love the Gill base layer tops for keeping us warm throughout the colder months.

Remember that much of your body heat is lost through the head, so don’t head out on the water without a warm, comfortable hat.

4. Take your sunglasses

If you’re lucky enough to be sailing on a sunny day in winter, you’ll find the sun a lot stronger on your eyes than in summer. The sun is lower in the sky during winter, so it can be in your eye line more than normal, so sunglasses are a must.

5. Be extra careful when mooring

Being extra careful when mooring is vital in case there’s bad weather whilst your boat is not in use.

If you can, choose a sheltered mooring spot if possible and ensure your mooring lines are secure and you have enough fenders.

At True North Sailing, we love the Ankarolina Mooring Wheel Webbing for immediate access to a superiorly strong line.

6. Check your fuel levels

Some fuel-berths may be operating reduced hours throughout the winter when passageways are quieter, so be sure to check opening hours before you set off and try to keep fuel levels stocked up.

Keeping your fuel tank full also helps to reduce condensation build-up, as there is less surface area for it to collect. This reduces the chance of diesel bug forming.

Always ensure you have Anti-Freeze too. The Morris Meg Anti-Freeze protects engines right down to -36!

7. Check Your First Aid Kit

We always recommend sailing with a fully-stocked first aid kit, so that you have everything you need if there is ever an accident.

If you don’t already have a first aid kit, now is the perfect time to buy one, as you never know when you’ll need it. You can view our first aid kits by clicking here.

If you already have a first aid kit on your boat, take some time to check it over before you next head out sailing. Ensure no water has gotten inside the kit, check the expiration dates on everything, and replace anything that has expired.

We hope you’ve found these winter sailing safety tips useful. Our final tip is to remember to have fun out there! Think safety first, and you’ll be able to make the most of the good winter weather we’re treated to.
