How True North Sailing is a Sustainable Sailing Chandlery

Here at True North Sailing, we’re committed to being as sustainable as a business as we possibly can be. We want our business to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible, and we keep that at the forefront of our minds when making business decisions.
Here are just some of the things we do to be a sustainable sailing chandlery…
We Use Eco-Friendly Packaging
We use eco-friendly packaging that protects our products when posting customer orders whilst still being friendly to the environment. We avoid using plastic packaging wherever possible and try to make the most sustainable packaging choices that still properly protect our products to ensure they arrive with our customers in perfect condition.
No Paperwork is Sent with our Packages
True North Sailing reduces waste by not sending paperwork out with our customer orders. Instead, all documentation is sent by email. This not only saves paper but also saves energy on printing documents too.
We Reuse Packaging
In addition to using eco-friendly packaging, True North Sailing reuses packaging wherever possible. This avoids excess waste being generated by our business and saves environmental resources.
Keeping Carbon Emissions Low in our Deliveries
True North Sailing uses Royal Mail as our shipping provider as they have the lowest reported carbon emissions per parcel of any major UK delivery company. Royal Mail is aiming to be carbon net-zero by 2040 and for their entire fleet to be powered by alternative energy by the same timeframe. Additionally, they continue to look for new ideas to reduce their emissions. This includes investing in technology, such as electric vehicles, drones, alternative fuel trucks and energy improvements. Read more about Royal Mail and sustainability here.
It’s important to us to use a shipping provider that is as sustainable as possible, as sending packages contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and has a big impact on the environment, especially when using some shipping companies. By choosing to use a sustainable shipping provider, we are supporting a company that aligns with your values and prioritises sustainability, just as we do.
We Sell Second-Hand Books
In our online shop, we are proud to sell a wide range of second-hand books about sailing to our customers. Selling second-hand books ensures existing books are reused instead of new books being printed when they don’t need to be. This reduces waste and the impact on the environment of this. Online Shopping is More Sustainable
Not only is online shopping convenient and time-saving, but it can also be more sustainable than traditional in-store shopping.
Firstly, shopping online eliminates the need to drive to a physical store, reducing carbon emissions and traffic congestion. Instead, products are shipped directly from our warehouse to our customer’s doorstep, reducing transportation costs and fuel consumption. In addition, we implement eco-friendly packaging practices, such as using recycled materials, reusing packaging and reducing the size of packaging to minimise waste.
Another benefit of online shopping is the ability to compare prices and products from different retailers, which can lead to more informed and sustainable purchasing decisions. Consumers can easily research the environmental impact of a product and choose to support companies that prioritise sustainability.
Finally, online shopping reduces the need for physical retail space, which can be a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. By shopping online, consumers can help reduce the overall demand for physical retail space, leading to a reduction in the energy required to power and maintain these spaces.
These are all the things we do to try to be as sustainable as possible, and by choosing to purchase from True North Sailing, you’ll be supporting a sustainable shipping chandlery.
