Time to Check Your Boat Ropes?

time to check your boat ropes

It’s so important to check your boat ropes for signs of wear and damage regularly

Here are our top tips to ensure your rope is safe to use…

1. Check deck equipment for any sharp edges

Every time you get onboard, carry out a quick check for any sharp edges that could cut a rope and cause it to fail. Check organisers, blocks, jammers, and clutches for any sharp edges or to see if anything needs to be cleaned to ensure ropes perform.

2. Check for any areas that could cause abrasion damage

Protect any areas of high wear with a form of chafe protection, such as PSP Tapes Anti Chafe, or Marlow Rope Dyneema Chafe Sleeve.

3. Clean ropes after sailing

Cleaning your ropes after each time you’ve been out on the water is a must. Always use clean, fresh water to remove salt and any debris which can cause damage and be sure to hang ropes up to dry after washing or sailing to prevent them from becoming mouldy.

4. Ensure you’re using the correct ropes

All ropes are designed for different applications, so choosing the right line is important.

Ropes are produced in several different ways depending on what they are intended for and which properties need to be enhanced or maintained. The two main types are twisted rope and braided rope.

5. Use the right splicing tools

The right splicing tools are the best ways to terminate a rope. We have a range of great splicing tools available, and if you need to brush up on your knowledge, we have a range of books to help you do just that

6. Store your ropes correctly

Storing your ropes correctly can help increase their lifespan. We recommend storing them somewhere clean and dark that stays at a stable temperature and isn’t humid. Avoid anywhere where chemical spills might be a factor, as this will greatly shorten the lifespan of your ropes.

7. Double check mooring ropes are tied correctly and in good working condition

This is always important; however, it’s especially important during the autumn and winter or during any periods where bad weather is forecast. Ensuring your boat is tied up correctly will help it stay as protected as possible.

8. Thoroughly check your lines regularly

After a few uses, it’s a good idea to unravel and check your lines thoroughly. A quick visual inspection of them won’t uncover all the potential issues that there might be, so we recommend inspecting the entire length visually and by running your hands over the full length too.

If you find a hardened spot, that is usually caused by friction damage and should be replaced. If you discover a damaged or shifted braid or a reduction in the diameter of the core beneath the braid, we recommend replacing your lines as soon as possible.

9. If in doubt, replace them

If you find an area that’s discoloured, stiff, faded, worn or anything else, and you’re not quite sure about it, it’s always best just to replace the rope. If a rope fails, there can be serious consequences, so it’s better to be safe than sorry and replace the rope instead of leaving it to chance.

If you haven’t carried out these checks recently, be sure to check your boat ropes the next time you jump on board. When you’re checking your ropes, this can be a great time to carry out checks on other parts of your boat too, such as the sheaves, clutches, jammers, guardrail lashings…the list goes on and on!
